Why Mashego sees ‘a team that can fight for league’ in Kaizer Chiefs
Former Orlando Pirates striker Katlego Mashego has explained why he feels Kaizer Chiefs can soon be able to challenge for the league title.
‘Mahoota’, as he’s well-known, was speaking with SAfm after Amakhosi won 1-0 over the Buccaneers on Saturday.
Chiefs completed a double over their arch-rivals Pirates this season just like they did in the previous campaign.
Mashego says if the Glamour Boys can grab the bragging rights of the Soweto derby twice in one season, there is potential in the team.
He believes there isn’t much to fix in Arthur Zwane’s side.
MASHEGO BELIEVES KAIZER CHIEFS CAN FIGHT FOR LEAGUE NEXT SEASON
“We all know both teams can’t win the league [this season] but surely if you have bragging rights in the derby, it gives you something to work with,” Mashego said.
“It gives you something to look forward to. They won the derby and I think they won the first leg as well.
“I think it gives you something to work with. Winning the derby is special and is good for the fans.
“So, I think Kaizer Chiefs have something to work with, the potential is there. They just need to tweak a few things.
“They’ll probably be a team that will fight for the league next season or in seasons to come.”
Saturday’s victory took Chiefs to the fifth position on the log standings. Just like Pirates, Amakhosi have collected 31 points from 21 league games this season.
Both teams aim to finish at least in the 2nd position which would take them to the CAF Champions League next season.
Chiefs are next in action against Richards Bay FC on Saturday, 04 March. The match will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium with kick-off set for 15:30.
