Why Matome Mabeba’s Richards Bay contract was terminated after three months
Matome Mabeba is free to find another club after his contract with DStv Premiership side Richards Bay was terminated by mutual consent on Wednesday after just three months.
The former Baroka fullback joined Richards Bay late in June on a free transfer.
At the time, it was thought that the 31-year-old left-back would add experience to his squad in their maiden topflight.
However, he has not managed to knuckle down a regular starting place at the club.
As a result, the club and player have agreed to part ways on mutual agreement.
“Yes, I can confirm he is leaving Richards Bay after both parties agreed to terminate. He’s a professional and understands that these things happen in football. We’re obviously working on his next move,” his agent, Pontsho Madumo of Cream Sports Management, told FARPost.
Mabeba not given a chance
According to a club source, the player was not in the technical team’s plans and hardly got a chance.
“He was not given a chance to prove himself. I suppose that’s because the technical team preferred other players,” the source said.
Bafana Bafana rookie Siyanda Msani has been the regular starter at left-back.
Msani, who got a Bafana call-up on Wednesday to replace the injured Terrence Mashego, has started five matches this season. He has made three substitute appearances.
Msani is a 21-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns player who is on loan at Richards Bay.
Mabeba joined the Natal Rich Boyz after his contract with TS Sporting expired.
He was part of the Telkom Knockout cup winning squad for Baroka in 2019.
Mabeba went on to spend the past two seasons with Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit TS Sporting.
Richards Bay have had a fair start to the season. They have won four of their games, drew twice and lost twice. They are in third place after eight rounds of 2022/23 fixtures.
