Newly signed Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu has revealed the trophy he wants to lift after completing his return to the club over the weekend.
The Bafana Bafana star vowed to carry the legacy of club veteran Hlompho Kekana, who was captain when the reigning DStv Premiership Champions won the CAF Champions League title in 2016.
Zungu was unveiled in front of a fully packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium ahead of the Masandawana clash against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.
The 29-year-old heaped praise on Kekana and vowed to carry his legacy forward as he takes over the jersey number eight, which was previously worn by the retired star.
“We decided that I’m going to wear jersey number eight. The guy who wore the jersey is a legend. I played with him. He was my midfield partner – Hlompho Kekana.
“I’m sure he will be happy to know that we decided that I wear number eight. It’s a heavy jersey, the guy achieved a lot with the club.
“Since I come back as man, as a matured player and an experienced player, I’ll try my level best to not drop the level of the jersey,” the former University of Pretoria player told the club’s official site.
‘Ben 10’ as he’s affectionately known, joins the Chloorkop-based side as a free agent after parting ways with French Ligue 2 outfit Amiens. The Duduza-born central midfielder made 13 appearances during the 2021/22 season in the second tier of France.
Furthermore, the Bafana Bafana international revealed the trophy he would like to win with the Brazilians.
“Personally, it added to me making a decision to come back, I’d really love to go and compete for the Champions League.
“The fact that the club is amongst one of the best in Africa, competing to win the trophy not just to win the group stages but to go as far as getting another star,” added the former Rangers star.
With Ka Bo Yellow seemingly on a mission to compete for every silverware on offer, Zungu will be looking to quickly break into that star studded team and help them win trophies.
