Steve Barker sets sights on another Stellenbosch record

After stretching their unbeaten run to 22 matches, Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has set his sights on yet another club record. The last time Stellenbosch lost a competitive match was in September last year against Mamelodi Sundowns.

They have since gone on to win 16 of the 22 matches, including the Carling Knockout Cup Final win against TS Galaxy.

With seven DStv Premiership matches to go, Stellies are just one win away from breaking their most wins in a DStv Premiership. With 11 wins, they have equalled the most wins a season achieved during the 2021/22 season. The club also finished fourth that season, their highest finish since gaining promotion in 2019.

ANOTHER RECORD LOOMING FOR ON-FORM STELLENBOSCH FC

“Yes, if we get to 12 wins it would be magnificent for us as a football club and still have more games to play,” said Barker.

“So definitely a target for us. It does seem to be a record-breaking season.”

Stellenbosch FC players celebrate against Sekhukhune United

“A lot of players for me are putting their hands up for nominations for the awards at the end of the season. Some really big performances for a long period.”

“That’s also a good run that we are on. It’s been tough, Sekhukhune back to back, two draws and dropping some points in that sequence,” he said.

Barker admits he felt hard done by after Sekhukhune scored an equaliser in the dying minutes of the match.

“It’s a bit tough when you concede as late as that. I thought maybe it was a game of two halves. I thought the first half we played well and dominated the ball and the game, creating some good chances.”
