Sifiso Myeni reveals how his 16-year-old daughter influenced the Botswana move

Former Orlando Pirates winger Sifiso Myeni has revealed how his 16-year-old daughter influenced him to make the bold move to Botswana back in 2022.

In the 2022/23 season, the ex-Orlando Pirates winger Sifiso Myeni took an unorthodox step to the unfashionable Botswana League.

He joined VTM Football Club, then in Botswana’s first division, where they were fighting tooth and nail to gain promotion.

Plausibly, he became a vital cog as VTM Football Club marched on to gain promotion into the Botswana Premier League. In fact, the 35-year-old captained the ambitious side as they leaped into Botswana football’s ultimate stage after the playoffs.

They have had a decent spell in the elite league, as they are eighth in the 16-team league. At individual level, the winger, who also played for SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits, has won several Man of the Match awards.

THE FORMER PIRATES WINGER SPEAKS ON HIS UNEXPECTED DECISION

Asked what pushed him to move to Botswana, Myeni gave credit to his daughter, Khanyisile. Myeni reveals the conversation that influenced him to leave SA for Botswana.

“I was playing in Kasi tournaments, and when the offer came, I was very sceptical. I really didn’t want to go because of several reasons,” Myeni told FARPost.

“The conversation about it came a long time ago, but I was not keen to take it up because I didn’t want to go away from my family. But my daughter then sat with me once to discuss it. My daughter influenced me. She opened up and told me not to hold back on something that I loved.

“It’s that one conversation that helped me to change my mind and take up the offer. Everyone in my family had spoken about it, but it made more sense coming from her.

“I took the offer for her sake and acknowledged that she wanted me to pursue the dream despite the fact that it will be away from home. She has always wanted me to defy the odds.

“Right now, it has been inspiring because so many players are looking up to me. They are happy to be around me. The impact I’ve made is beyond what I thought.

“Being a role model here has shown me the other side of life that I didn’t know. I’m happy, and I have gained a new energy.”

Myeni has a stellar career in the DStv Premiership, where he boosts of over 280 appearances. According to Transfermarkt, he scored a combined 35 goals and provided 46 assists for Pirates, SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits.
