Chiefs search for answers: Johnson mulls unexpected approach

Kaizer Chiefs are in a slump, and Cavin Johnson is searching for answers. After a string of disappointing losses, the interim coach is considering an unconventional approach to address the team’s struggles.

Amakhosi suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Richards Bay FC in the DStv Premiership on Sunday at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

Before losing against Richards Bay, Chiefs had lost their previous two matches in the league against Chippa United and Stellenbosch FC. The Glamour Boys last tasted a victory on the 5th of March when they beat Golden Arrows 1-0 at FNB Stadium.

The year 2024 hasn’t been kind to Chiefs. Through their first nine games across all competitions, they’ve only managed one victory. The Soweto giants have also struggled for consistency, drawing four and losing four matches. Their recent form is particularly concerning, with no wins in their last five outings.

Chiefs find themselves languishing outside the top eight in 10th place on the Premiership table. With 30 points after 24 matches, their season has been a mixed bag. They’ve managed eight wins in the league so far, but those have been countered by six draws and ten losses.

Johnson Seeks Out-of-the-Box Solutions to Address Chiefs’ Struggles

With Chiefs looking to turn the corner in the remaining six games and finish in a respectable position, Cavin Johnson says he may take players to a gun-shooting range to lift the team spirit and cure the club’s struggles.

“At some moment, we are all not psychologists; we are just football coaches. We are not psychologists, so we have to look at that,” said Johnson.

“We need to understand why is this happening, what’s the combinations, why are we not having fun, and you try doing that in your training, whereby you create many free goal scoring opportunities where players can know what it [scoring] feels like.

“But it’s still not happening. Maybe I need to take them to gun shooting [range], and they’ll be better, but at the moment, we have to dig deep in our technical staff to see what we can do to finish the product.

Chiefs will face SuperSport United in their next encounter at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, 27 April. Interestingly, SuperSport have also been struggling for positive results, and they lost to Chippa United this past weekend.

Matsatsantsa are winless in the league in 2024, with their last victory dating back to December 2023 when they beat Orlando Pirates 3-1.
