Cape Town City FC dropped a bombshell on Mpho Makola with the January transfer window nearing the end.
Cape Town City FC took a decision to release the 36-year-old midfielder on Monday 30 January 2023.
Makola had five months left on his contract after penning a year-long deal at the start of the 2022/23 season.
His contract would have come to an end in June 2023 although the club had an option of a further year.
“The club gave him his release letter on Monday [30 January 2023] but it’s unclear why the decision was taken as he had five months left on his deal.
“He sent a message on the team group telling the rest of the players that he was leaving.
“It came unexpectedly for us although we knew his relationship with the coach was a bit compromised,” a Cape Town City FC source told FARPost.
The former Orlando Pirates midfielder has been used sparingly this season.
He has made nine appearances so far, only contributing one assist.
