All Stars coach Badela makes huge Thembinkosi Lorch claim
"A Lorch that's on the pitch is good for South African football."
All Stars coach Sinethemba Badela has made a huge claim on Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch who returned to action on Saturday after a lengthy injury lay-off.
Lorch marked his return from a knee injury in style as he came off the bench to fire home Pirates’ second goal in the 2-0 win over Badela’s men – All Stars.
The two clubs clashed in a Nedbank Cup last 32 tie at a wet and slippery Wits Stadium on Saturday evening.
It was Lorch’s first appearance in Pirates colours since last August, and he evidently made an impact.
Soon after his introduction at the restart, the Soweto giants found their rhythm following a poor first half where their first shot at goal came in the 32nd minute.
BADELA EXPLAINS LORCH’S IMPORTANCE IN SA FOOTBALL
“Look, we were not sure how ready he [Lorch] was to play, and of course a Lorch that’s on the pitch is good for South African football,” said All Stars tactician Badela.
“And you can see the quality, the movement in between the lines, how he turns, and he provokes the defenders to come at him, and the decision making,” added Badela.
He explained why he strongly believes a fully fit Lorch; playing regularly will benefit South African football at large.
Badela is of the view that Lorch has a huge role to play in coach Hugo Broos’ rebuilding effort at Bafana Bafana.
“I mean, he’s a fantastic player. That’s why the fans love him so much at Pirates, and that’s why the country is crying; why is he not playing, so that he can help the national team, so to face players like that it will only help our players,” he said.
When on song, Lorch can make Pirates tick, but injuries have hampered his progress in the last two season.
The 29-year-old creative midfielder featured in 15 DStv Premiership matches in the previous campaign and has only played five games for Pirates in the 2022/23 season.
And while the Soweto giants clinched the MTN8 title without Lorch, they seem to need the former PSL Player of the Season’s magic in the Nedbank Cup and league.
“It’s a little bit difficult because the first team that starts is a very good team, and then they’ve got a bench that comes on and they are still very good,” added Badela, who admitted that Lorch made a huge difference in the second stanza.
“But we must deal with that, and if we want to step up and come to this level, that’s what we’re going to expect every game when we play against top teams such as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
“So that’s the level that we want to go to, so we have to prepare ourselves for that level.”
