Clinton Larsen identifies a fixture that will decide their promotion

Magesi FC coach Clinton Larsen has singled out a fixture that could decide the destiny of the Motsepe Foundation Championship title and automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.

Larsen reckons the Motsepe Foundation Championship promotion race could be decided as early as the upcoming weekend. Magesi dropped two crucial points following a 2-2 draw against Hungry Lions on Tuesday.

However, they remain on top of the log after closest rivals University of Pretoria lost 2-0 to Maritzburg United.

AmaTuks and Magesi will now clash at Tuks Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a match that will likely determine who secures automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership according to Larsen.

A MATCH THAT CLINTON LARSEN BELIEVES WILL DECIDE THE PROMOTION RACE

“If we win on Saturday, it won’t be that interesting because it will be over,” Larsen told journalists.

“We win that game and it will be very difficult, depending on what happens on Wednesday night [when the University of Pretoria plays Maritzburg United]. The gap could be even bigger when we beat them so for them it’s their home game and if we perform like this.

“I am confident we can get something out of the game. But every point in each of the six games, as long as we don’t lose. We win and draw games. I think that’s a recipe for promotion.”

MAGESI FC COACH PLEASED WITH THE TEAM’S PERFORMANCE DESPITE PLAYING TO A DRAW

After the draw against Hungry Lions, Larsen was asked why he celebrated after the final whistle despite dropping two points.

“It wasn’t about the point. It was about the performance. I have been here 15 months or so and this is by far our best performance,” he explained.

“The football we played today from the first to the 90th minute was high-level football. It’s not easy to impose and dominate a Hungry Lions team. They are a decent team, but the way we played today they couldn’t touch the ball.”

Magesi have now gone 10 matches with no defeat in the league. But the 53-year-old admits that they might still drop points as the season nears its conclusion.

“The unbeaten run is important but everybody is going to drop points between now and the end of the season,” he said.

“Ourselves, AmaTuks, Baroka, and Maritzburg like everybody are going to drop points. It was a matter of points where we dropped points.

“Today was that day but we are not disappointed. We have punched above our weight for so long, the entire season and we will continue to do so and continue to surprise people.”
