Bongani Zungu edges closer to Sundowns return
Two impeccable FARPost sources have told this publication that Bongani Zungu is nearing a return to Mamelodi Sundowns after he was spotted at Chloorkop on Wednesday night.
After Sundowns’ shock 1-0 loss to TS Galaxy, Zungu met with the club’s management, and indications are that the club is working around the clock to get him back at Chloorkop. The club has reportedly tabled a deal for the talented midfielder.
The meeting comes just two days after his agent reportedly had talks with one of the Sundowns coaches regarding his future.
“His agent has had conversations around his future with Rulani [Mokwena]. Rulani knows the young man too well, they have a good relationship, and he’d be keen to work with him,” the source said.
Zungu is a free agent after his contract with Amiens expired at the end of June. However, FARPost can confirm he was part of the squad preparing for the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup in Durban last month, although he did not proceed with them to Ulundi, where the games were played.
The Ligue 2 outfit has already played two games in the 2022/23 season, with the most recent being a tie against Annecy, which ended in a 1-0 win for his former team on Saturday.
There is no sign that the club will retain its services after an indifferent season. He was training at Chloorkop doing individual training at the club. “It doesn’t look like there’s interest from overseas. And the fact that he used Sundowns’ facilities for his personal training last week points to him rejoining the club,” added the source.
The former Bafana Bafana midfielder rose to stardom under Pitso Mosimane at Sundowns. The 29-year-old left the Brazilians after being snapped up by Portuguese-based side Vitoria de Guimaraes. In recent seasons, he played his football in France with Amiens SC and had a loan stint under Steven Gerrard at Scottish giants Rangers.
He is on record as saying Sundowns is his home. “I met [the Sundowns’] president [Patrice] Motsepe in Paris the other year, and he told me Sundowns will always be home,” Zungu said in a lengthy interview with Andile Mncube and Mazola Molefe.
“So, Sundowns will always be my home, no matter what happens from now until when I make my decision about where I’m going to be.”
