Caleb sets new record as Chiefs humble Stellies

It was a good day for Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana and Kaizer Chiefs as they humbled Stellenbosch 3-1 in the DStv Premiership clash at DHL Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Caleb banged his first hat-trick for Amakhosi, putting his goal tally to six, level with Mamelodi Sundowns frontman Peter Shalulile in the league.

The Burundian goalscorer became the first striker to hit a hat-trick this season and the first player in the PSL history to score a hat-trick from spot kicks.

Stellies began the game on a high note with a dazzling display which led to the first goal of the showdown following Njabulo Blom’s howler and Nhlanhla Mgaga made no mistake but to put the ball into the back of the net in the 30th minute.

However, Arthur Zwane’s troops were not discouraged as they scored an equaliser on the stroke of the first half after Caleb was brought down in the box.

‘The Black Panther’ stood up to convert the penalty to make it 1-1.

The half-time whistle blew with both sides still level.

Back out for the remaining 45 minutes, the Glamour Boys continued from where they had left off before the break.

Just four minutes into the second stanza, ‘The Black Panther’ gave Chiefs a lead from a penalty.

In the 55th minute, Caleb was brought down in the box again and penalty was awarded to the visitors, and Stellies were reduced to 10 men as Rafiq de Goede picked up a red after two consecutive yellow cards.

Caleb made no mistake as he converted the penalty to complete his hat-trick.

To everyone who said that the 24-year-old goal poacher would struggle in the South African football top-flight, are now swallowing their own words, and comparing him to Manchester City’s goalscoring machine Erling Haaland.

As things stand, Chiefs have climbed up the log standings to the fourth position with 17 points from 10 outings, whereas Stellies are placed sixth on the table with 13 points from the same another of games played by their counterparts.

Caleb will now hope to continue his impressive fine form for the Soweto giants when they face Chippa United on Saturday, 15 October at the FNB Stadium.
