Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler: ‘We gave the ball cheaply’

Coach Eric Tinkler says his Cape Town City lost 0-1 to SuperSport United on Tuesday evening due to giving the ball away cheaply.

Eric Tinkler said the hosts failed to keep possession of the ball during the DStv Premiership match at Cape Town Stadium.

ERIC TINKLER’S ANALYSIS OF CAPE TOWN CITY’S POSSESSION

“Normally, our possession starts very good but today, we didn’t show that,” he told SuperSport TV.

“Our passing was very poor. We gave the ball very, very cheaply and that played in their hands.”

The former Bafana midfielder said Cape Town City managed to minimise SuperSport’s set-piece threat for the better part of the game, only for lapses to cost the hosts.

“I thought that for the larger majority of the game, we dealt with the long balls, we dealt with the corners and we dealt with the crosses,” he added.

“…but you have to have the ball in order to create the chances. Our possession was poor. We were struggling to link up with the strikers.”

Eric Tinkler also felt the defence failed to stick to the basics towards the end of the game.

“I think that when you concede a goal when you are down to 10 men, you have to be smarter defensively whereby you can’t sell yourself,” he explained.

“Yes, we talk about trying to stop the cross, but if you are a man short, rather you deal with the cross.”

BRADLEY GROBLER NOW JOINT LEADING LEAGUE GOAL SCORER

Striker Bradley Grobler scored the lone goal of the game for SuperSport with eight minutes remaining on the clock.

Grobler joined Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana as the joint leading scorers in the DStv Premiership with seven goals apiece.

SuperSport leapfrogged Richards Bay into second position, six points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The loss, on the other hand, left the Citizens 11th with 16 points from 14 games on the log table.

Cape Town City next host Orlando Pirates at DHL Stadium on January 7 2023.
