Ex-Chiefs defender Kgotso Moleko resurfaces in KZN

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs defender Kgotso Moleko has resurfaced in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) at a DStv Premiership club.

Moleko has been clubless since parting ways with AmaZulu at the end of last season.

He had joined Usuthu at the start of 2021/22 season after being released by Amakhosi, who opted against renewing his contract.

The 33-year-old Moleko is searching for a new home and is trying his luck at relegation-threatened Maritzburg United.

Moleko has started training with Maritzburg with the hope of impressing newly appointed head coach Fadlu Davids.

Maritzburg announced the return of Davids on Monday.

Davids takes over the coaching reigns from John Maduka who was sacked after an underwhelming start to the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.

MOLEKO LOOKING TO IMPRESS DAVIDS

Moleko will be hoping that his experience of playing for the Soweto giants, Chiefs will come in handy.

The right back struggled to cement a regular place at AmaZulu after making only 10 appearances in all competitions.

The Durban-based side embarked on mass exodus and booted out players who were deemed surplus to requirements, including Moleko.

Moleko was joined by big name players to head out the exit door.

The likes of Xola Mlambo, Luvuyo Memela, Philani Zulu, Tsepo Masilela, Hendrick Ekstein, Sphelele Mthembu, Thabo Qalinge and Augustine Mulenga also left Usuthu.

The Team of Choice will be looking to use the FIFA World Cup break to bring their season back on track and climb up the up the league table.

They currently rooted at the basement of the DStv Premiership with 11 points.

The former Orlando Pirates assistant coach, Davids, is in a familiar environment at Maritzburg.

He was at the helm during the 2018/19 season, guiding Maritzburg to the Nedbank Cup final, which they lost to Free State Stars.

Davids tasked with ensuring that the Team of Choice avoids the axe at the end of the season.

Maritzburg have only managed two wins, five draw and six defeats in 13 league games played thus far.

The FIFA break gives Davids enough time to fix the club’s poor defensive and scoring records.

The KZN side has the worst defence in the league they have conceded 19 goals.

They also don’t score much as they have netted only six goals, which is the joint least number of strikes in the league this season.

Davids will be eager to improve the club’s poor performance when the league resume towards the end of December.
