Ex-SuperSport striker Atusaye Nyondo hangs around for PSL options
Former SuperSport United striker Atusaye Nyondo says he is hanging around South Africa while waiting for a chance to play in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) again.
Nyondo has been clubless since last year when he parted ways with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Pretoria Callies.
He suffered a career-threatening injury that further ruled him out of the market.
The 2010 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) striker for Malawi told FARPost that he had recovered fully from the Achilles injury.
Atusaye Nyondo said he still has unfinished business with PSL football; hence he has turned down a few offers in Africa and abroad.
WHY ATUSAYE NYONDO TURNED DOWN ETHIOPIA OFFER
“I stay in Pretoria. There were some few options from clubs in Ethiopia and the Arab countries, but you can only be sure when the deal is done,” he said.
“I could have gone to Ethiopia but I don’t want to go there because I was already there. I know the situation that side.”
The former Flames forward said he had given himself up to the end of this year to explore the openings in South Africa.
“I will look at what is on the table this month of December. I am just checking a few options to see which one is a good offer [in SA],” he added.
RETURNING TO MALAWI REMAINS AN OPTION
Nyondo did not rule out the possibility of returning home to play for childhood club Silver Strikers in the capital Lilongwe.
“It is a good and competitive league as well in Malawi. I always follow the league in Malawi. I can see the league is getting stronger,” he stated.
“If nothing comes up this side, I can always go back home and play there. Home is always the best. I don’t see any problem playing there, as it where I started my career. I just want to assess the options here then I will take a decision.”
The Silver Strikers’ top goal scorer said he has been keeping fit while waiting for potential suitors.
Nyondo last played for Pretoria Callies last year before he suffered the career threatening-injury.
He had joined Callies after returning from Ethiopia where he had a stint with the East African country’s giants St George in 2019.
The 32-year-old announced his arrival in South Africa in 2011 when he won the Golden Boot Award for the National First Division with 16 goals while on the books of Carara Kicks.
The Malawian eventually earned a big money move to SuperSport United a season later.
Nyondo left SuperSport after a few seasons and his next port of call was Bloemfontein Celtic then University of Pretoria.
The former Flames striker told FARPost in August this year that the latest injury cost him a potential reunion with University of Pretoria.
He said he got injured two days before signing for the AmaTuks.
