Former Chippa United coach and manager Morgan Mammila has penned an emotional tribute to his ex-boss Chippa Mpengesi, as he announced his retirement from coaching.
Mammilla, well known as an administrator in the PSL, shocked the football masses after being appointed head coach of the DStv Premiership club in October 2022. His appointment was received with criticism over his lack of qualifications. But six months later, Mammila is a holder of a CAF D and C license coaching qualifications.
In a letter sent to Mpengesi on Thursday, the former Baroka CEO thanked the Chippa Boss for believing in him.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you personally for identifying my coaching talent,” Mammila wrote to Mpengesi.
“Also, for appointing me as head coach of your team, Chippa United football club, without being advised by anyone. I really want to congratulate you for making me the first-ever coach to win four games in a row at Chippa United.
“The first DStv Premiership coach to win four games in a row for the season 2022/2023. It can only take a genius person or a specially gifted person to take the decision you took by identifying my coaching capabilities. To appoint me as the head coach of your team,” continued Mammila.

“I feel honoured for being a coach at your team for the past fourteen (14) DStv Premiership matches. In which there were five wins, four draws, five losses, 17 goals scored, and also took the team to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup.
“The past two seasons (2020/2021, 2021/2022). Chippa United have only managed to register five in 30 league matches with no single win at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. But through your vision this season, the team has managed to win five matches in 14 matches with me as head coach. Also, two home win matches at Nelson Mandela Stadium after two years,” he wrote.
“How can I forget the lifetime coaching badges that you have paid for me, my Chairman? I bow out of the team a happy man. Because I have done my part for the success of the team.”

“I have taken a decision to retire from Coaching with the achievements that you have helped me achieve with your team. All the best to the team that has made me who I am today. A good dancer knows when to leave the stage.”
