Former PSL coach says Khama Billiat is a victim of circumstances at Chiefs

Former PSL and Zimbabwe national team coach Sunday Chidzambwa says Khama Billiat should not be fingered for Kaizer Chiefs’ failure to break Mamelodi Sundowns‘ stranglehold of the DStv Premiership.

Some quarters are convinced that the talented forward has failed to aid Amakhosi’s aspiration of dominating the DStv Premiership.

The former Zimbabwe international crossed floors from Sundowns to Kaizer Chiefs in 2018 but has not replicated what he achieved at his former club.

“People have different views. I even see a lot has been said and written about him,” Chidzambwa told FARPost.

“He [Billiat] may be approaching the final months of his contract, but from the way I see it, it’s not about him.

‘IT IS NOT A KHAMA BILLIAT ISSUE’

“It’s a team issue. They say he has not done enough to win trophies for the team in comparison to what he did at Sundowns.

“But to be honest, these are two different teams. They have different sets of players and certainly a different level of dedication.

“When it’s time for Chiefs to win, they can win, but it can never be narrowed to a single player. When it’s time, they can do it with him.”

The 32-year-old, Billiat joined Chiefs following a memorable stint with the Tshwane giants, where he accounted for top accolades.

Among the litany of accolades, Billiat won the Players’ Player of the Season, PSL Player of the Season and Midfielder of the Season in 2016 with Sundowns.

He emerged as runner-up to his former teammate Denis Onyango for the CAF African Player of the Year based in Africa award.

Furthermore, Billiat clinched several major trophies at Sundowns, including the 2016 CAF Champions League and league title.

However, he has been unable to win as much at Amakhosi. And his future is up in the air again as he enters the last six months of his contract.

But for Chidzambwa, Billiat is just a victim of circumstances.

“The circumstances are not favouring him. If I was his coach, I would play him to his strengths. He is good at assisting and even scoring,” Chidzambwa added.

“Even If I was at the national team [Zimbabwe], I would make sure that make sure to call him back from retirement.”
