Grant Kekana: ‘Orlando Pirates are a lot more motivated’

While Orlando Pirates legend Edward Motale opined that the Buccaneers are still bleeding from their defeat in the Carling Cup, Grant Kekana expects the Soweto giants to exert pressure of demonic proportions in their revenge mission.

The Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Kekana, admits that Pirates have emerged strong from their transition since Jose Riviero’s arrival.

Kekana, 30, says the defeat in the Beer Cup final is their biggest motivation ahead of Friday’s blockbuster clash.

WHAT GRANT KEKANA EXPECTS

“Pirates has been in a transition period where they have been acquiring the services of more quality players,” said Kekana.

“They are a lot more motivated now. So, it’s always going to be a tough fixture but an entertaining one.

“So, I think from our side; we love playing in these kind of games because of the fans. Honestly, at this point, we can never tell how the game is going to play out each time we meet Pirates.

“This time could even be different. In the last MTN8 fixture, we shot ourselves in the foot, so every time we play against them, we try to rectify our mistakes.

“It’s going to be tough, but one that we are thoroughly prepared for.”

The Soweto giants travel to Loftus Versfeld Stadium for a date with the league-defending champions this Friday afternoon at 15h30 [CAT].

Without a doubt, this is the headline fixture as the DStv Premiership roars into life following a brief hiatus due to the 2022 World Cup finals.

Jose Riveiro and his men suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Masandawana in their latest meeting.

However, Kekana is the first to admit that this one could potentially be a banana skin, considering how the Pirates’ arsenal has strengthened.

“We are more focused on ourselves than anything else. We are motivating each other,” added Kekana

“Right now, everyone is fighting for their place, so we don’t want those that are given the chance to let others down.”
