How Kaizer Chiefs link affected Luke Fleurs’ game at SuperSport

SuperSport United defender Luke Fluers has opened up about how being linked to one of the biggest clubs in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs affected his game.

Fluers has been one of the most promising young defenders in the DStv Premiership in recent seasons, establishing himself at the heart of the Matsatsantsa’s backline.

He was crowned 2021/22 DStv Premiership Young Player season at the Premier Soccer League (PSL) awards last campaign after his stellar display in SuperSport colours.

As a result of his good performances, 22-year old centre-back attracted the interest of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who called-up the defender to the national team at some point last year.

Fluers was also said to be on Chiefs’ shopping list, linked with club for months with reports suggesting that he will join the Soweto giants in the January transfer window.

However, the deal has not materialised and Fluers has admitted the news that he is wanted by Chiefs affected him mentally.

“Obviously, it played a little on my mind that I was leaving this season or something,” said Fluers.

“But I remained and I’m happy now at SuperSport.

“It’s just for me to keep going throughout the season and see what comes my way,” he added.

Fluers, who at 22 has made over 65 appearances in South Africa’s topflight further explained what it means to be linked with a club of Chiefs’ calibre.

“To me it says that the work that I’m putting, people can see it,” he said. “And that’s why big teams are interested in me,” stated the Western Cape-born man.

“It’s always nice to see my name out, it was not there because I came from nothing and now my name is just everywhere.

“It’s nice to see my it [name getting recognition] actually but I’ll keep on doing my job he at SuperSport.”

Fluers joined Matsatsantsa from Ubuntu Cape Town at the start of the 2018/19 season after making a name for himself in the Nedbank Cup.

In the current campaign, Fluers has had a slow start as he has been in and out of the SuperSport match day squad due to injury.

The starlet has only made seven appearances in the league so far.
