How Lekgwathi rates current Pirates team compared to last season’s
Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi has weighed in on the club’s current team compared to the one of last season.
Lekgwathi reckons that the current Pirates squad seem stronger in comparison to the 2021/22 campaign side, given the quality of the players they have signed this time around.
The Pirates legend, Lekgwathi, went on single out some of the new players that have added the depth that the Soweto giants needed as things are on the up recently.
He pinpointed the brilliance of striker Kermit Erasmus, attacking midfielder Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo and defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, who are excelling under the guidance of the new man in charge, Jose Riveiro.
And what the Pirates legend has articulated has been proven right, as Riveiro led the club to the MTN8 triumph earlier this month.
The Sea Robbers might have punched below their weight with the squad of last term, but things are taking a different tune this season with Spaniard mentor, Riveiro at the helm.
LEKGWATHI’S VIEWS…
“You know, sometimes you don’t compare teams, but for me, the new coach came, so everyone getting a chance is going to try so hard to impress the coach,” Lekgwathi told FARPost.
“I’m looking at Kermit Erasmus now, the way he plays now shows that he wants to impress and win that position. I think with his experience he is going to help the youngsters in the team.
“Not only him, but there is also a lot of competition in that position. For me, to compare to the last season’s team is that the new players that have been signed this season have added depth to the team.
The retired treble-winning Bucs skipper continued: “Look at Sibisi; he has stamped his authority at the back. And Ndlondlo came into the team like someone who has been playing at the club for quite some time.
“Lepasa [Zakhele], coming off from the injury, surprised everyone as he told himself that he wants to bang goals.”
