Hunt on SuperSport second stint: ‘The club has changed completely’

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt says Matsatsantsa a Pitori are at a “much lower base” compared to where they were when he left the club in 2013.

Hunt had a fruitful stint with the Pretoria-based outfit between 2007 and 2013 where he hoisted three league titles and the Nedbank Cup before he joined Bidvest Wits.

When this season started, the 58-year-old returned to the Swanky Boys for his second spell.

The Cape Town-born coach says his squad needs a revamp and believes he’s “big” on that task.

HUNT: ‘WE’VE GOT PROBLEMS’

“The club hasn’t been in the top four since I left,” he said during SuperSport’s camp in Durban.

“When I got to Wits, they were fourth, we came third, third, we came second, and then we came first.

“Obviously, that was working the squad, meaning, trading because that’s what it’s about, you need to get in, out, swap and move.

“We did well, not buying, we bought one player, and the rest were all frees. I hear other coaches saying we bought a team

“We can do the same here [SuperSport], we just need to get the right place, right time, and try to strengthen.

“We obviously got problems and that’s something I’m very big on, we can’t let the team get old together.

“They did a good job here before but we need to look after our squad in terms of age and ability.”

Hunt went on to claim that the club is no longer managed the same way as it was during his first stint.

He highlighted the sale of the club’s “important players” to their biggest opposition as one of the issues at hand.

‘THE CLUB IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT’

“Obviously, this is a different project, this is a different scenario, coming to,” he added.

“I know the club has changed completely from what it was when I was here.

“The club is totally different, it is financially run differently, much tighter.

“But it’s fine, I accepted the job, and let’s see what we can do.

“We’ll try the youth, this and that, try and be clever in the market place.

“And you know my feeling about selling to our biggest opposition.”
