Hunt opens up on possible Gabuza SuperSport United departure
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has given a hint as to why the club could soon part ways with striker Thamsanqa Gabuza.
The bulky forward, Gabuza, has been strongly linked with a move to DStv Premiership side Stellenbosch FC.
The 35-year-old is set to make way for Senegalese striker Mamour Niang.
Niang, who is a younger brother to former PSL striker Mame Niang, is set to join SuperSport on a three-year deal.
Gabuza has been at SuperSport since 2019 having joined the club from Orlando Pirates. He has played in over 100 games for th Tshwane side with 22 goals and six assists to his name so far.
WHY GAVIN HUNT IS UNSURE ABOUT THAMSANQA GABUZA FUTURE
“It’s a budget thing. Obviously, we are bringing this boy [Mamour] Niang now and obviously the age,” said Hunt when asked about Gabuza’s future.
“So, obviously, there is an opportunity for the boy to get an extension, so I am not sure if this thing is going to happen. Maybe it will happen [Gabuza’s departure].
Hunt added: We have three number nines now, but this is football, and it’s obviously a budget that you have to work on.
“But I don’t know how things are going to work. I just heard, I have not even spoken to the boy [Mamour] about it.”
WHY HUNT IS NOT PLEASED WITHThatayaone Ditlhokwe’S DEPARTURE
The SuperSport tactician, Hunt also expressed his displeasure on how one of his most trusted defenders Thatayaone Ditlhokwe was allowed to leave.
The Botswana international was unveiled by Kaizer Chiefs as their new signing on a pre-contract last week.
“Obviously, I am very upset about TT [Ditlhokwe] leaving because this should have never happened. But I wasn’t here, but I know what should have happened and what didn’t happen,” said Hunt.
“But it’s very disappointing losing a player that is 24 and he will only be at his best at his 30s because he is a center back because they improve as they get older.
“Ever since I have been here, he has improved immensely; he has two-three goals this year which he hasn’t done, he defended well, and he has been a rock for the club. So, it’s highly disappointing.”
