Hunt vows to return SuperSport at the top again

Newly appointed SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has made a promise to the club to retain the club to its former glory following its downfall in recent seasons.

In his first tenure at the club, 55-year-old Hunt guided the Tshwane giants to three consecutive league victories from 2007 to 2010 becoming one of the powerhouses in the DStv Premiership.

Following Hunt’s departure, the club’s form deteriorated as they haven’t won the league title in 12 years. However, they managed to become “Kings of Domestic Cups after clinching five cups under the leaderships of Eric Tinkler, Stuart Baxter, Gordon Igesund and Kaitano Tembo; two MTN8 cups, two Nedbank Cup trophies and one Telkom Knockout cup.

“It’s a different team and club now [Supersport United], things have changed but its going to be a good challenge. We need to be more competitive in the league,” Hunt told SNAWA.

“It will take time, its a new team and I am not going back to the same team. The team has lost a lot of X Factor players. Sometimes it could get worse before it gets better, we have to be patient.”

“I was blown away by the facilities at Supersport now. I cannot wait to get my hands on it and improve the situation. I have always liked to stay with clubs that are stable. A club like Supersport is one where you can stay, grow and work and Supersport has always been stable”

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach pinpointed the team’s downfall to selling of their best players, a situation that has to be changed immediately.

“When I was here, we sold the whole team and I was upset at the time. Thereafter the team took a bit of a slide in that year and the next year we finished top 3. I think if we had kept the team, we could have done a Sundowns and won the league 4/5 times in a row.”
