Is Marumo Gallants risking it all for continental honours?

DStv Premiership relegation-threatened side, Marumo Gallants, seem to be risking it all for African honours and here’s why.

The relegation axe is looming large for Gallants languishing at the foot end of the DStv Premiership with 24 points after 25 matches.

Gallants have only managed to seal six victories in the league with their most recent result being a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

Currently, the Limpopo side is in third worst teams in terms of scoring goals in the league, with just 22. They are currently behind newly promoted side, Richards Bay [17 goals] and TS Galaxy, who netted 20 goals.

But despite their bad run of form in the domestic league, Gallants are surprisingly doing well in the CAF Confederation Cup.

GALLANTS RUN IN THE CAF CONFEDERATION CUP

This is not the first rodeo for Gallants in the Confederation Cup. Their first campaign was last season, when they qualified as Nedbank Cup winners.

In their debut season in the Confederation Cup, Bahlabani Ba Ntwa were knocked out of the competition just before the group stages started.

However, this season, they have exceeded expectations by a large mile.

Marumo did not just qualify for the quarterfinals of the Confederation Cup; they also won their group with 12 points, winning four games and losing two games away from home.

Even though their run of form in the continent is brilliant, the main worry and concern remains in the league.

Gallants is left with just five games to salvage their season in the DStv Premiership.

And the big question is, can they transfer their continental form into the league to try save their status. Or are they willing to risk it all for African honours?

Gallants will face Chippa United in their next league game at home on Wednesday, 12 April.
