Khenyeza defends Sundowns from accusations of weakening DStv Premiership

Golden Arrows co-coach Mabhuti Khenyeza has jumped to the defence of Mamelodi Sundowns, who have been accused of weakening the DStv Premiership with their superior spending power.

The Brazilians have been bossing the transfer market for quite some time, splashing out on big players who have helped them dominate in the past decade.

Many Football enthusiasts have suggested that Premier Soccer League (PSL) should follow in UEFA‘s footsteps in introducing the financial fair play.

This would then prevent rich clubs like Sundowns from spending more than they earn in revenues.

However, Mabhuti Khenyeza says the Brazilians’ dominance isn’t only due to their deep pockets as they still put hard work behind the scenes in building a strong team.

KHENYEZA ON DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUNDOWNS AND OTHER TEAMS

“There are 11 versus 11 players on the field, Sundowns don’t just buy players and go on vacation,” he said.

“They work hard but other teams buy players and go on vacation; that’s the difference between Sundowns and other teams.

“Now, it’s not about buying. You can buy any player but if they arrive and get comfortable, don’t apply themselves, it doesn’t mean anything to buy those players.”

Khenyeza, who also played for Sundowns, stated that it’s no use to bring in the so-called big names to the club if they won’t apply themselves.

‘IT’S NOT ABOUT THE NAME’

“Let’s just be honest, football is all about application, it’s not about the name. I can’t, at the age of 40 think I’m going to walk in the park. It’ll be determined by how I apply myself,” he added.

“That’s why there are so many surprises all the time. But we still think we need to get so and so to come and play here.

“You can buy all the stars but if they are not prepared to work because they need to defend and attack, it’s not money that’s going to do that.

“Physically, they need to apply themselves, if they can’t, what’s the use to buy lots of players? You can only do that in the market where you sell vege and fruits.”
