Lukhubeni reunites with Dylan Kerr

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Nicholas Lukhubeni has joined Swallows on a one-year loan deal, reuniting with Dylan Kerr.

The two worked together at Marumo Gallants during the 2020/21 season and Kerr was eager to work with him before his switch to Maritzburg United.

“He has joined Swallows on a one-year loan deal from Mamelodi Sundowns. He remains their player, and they’ll obviously decide what they want to do at the end of the loan spell,” a source said.

Nicholas Lukhubeni spent the 2021/22 season with Pietermaritzburg-based Maritzburg United with no place for him at his parent club Sundowns. Lukhubeni is available to face Cape Town City in their next DStv Premiership fixture.

Lukhubeni was registered to be part of Downs’ senior team in September 2019 alongside Harold Majadibodu, who has since left the club, and Abram Ngcobo. He is on record saying he did not see his promotion coming at the time.

After a good start in the Brazilians’ senior team set-up, which saw him score one of his most memorable goals after just six appearances, he was touted as an inspiration to his counterparts in the Multichoice Diski Challenge.

“Not a lot was going through my mind. I saw space, saw Gaston (Sirino) on my left, and I think Vila (Sibusiso Vilakazi) on my right. I thought I was going to pass, but I saw the defenders tracking back, so I decided to take a shot because my left foot does a lot of good work, so I thought I should put it to the test too,” Lukhubeni explained as he relived the first goal in Sundowns colours during a 3-0 win over Chippa United.

He will be hoping for regular action at The Birds as he looks to establish himself in the PSL. Additional reporting by Robert Matakanye.
