Mamelodi Sundowns defeat Orlando Pirates for 15th straight victory

Mamelodi Sundowns made it 15 victories in 15 league matches after overpowering Orlando Pirates with a slender 1-0 victory in the DStv Premiership on Saturday at the Orlando Stadium.

With this win, Masandawana ended the Bucaaneers’ four-match unbeaten run. They also extended their lead at the summit of the log to 23 points while the Buccaneers remain in fourth place with 28 points.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS’ MAILULA CAPITALISED FROM SIBISI’S ERROR

Nkosinathi Sibisi’s error at the back gifted the visitors with an early goal. The red-hot Cassius Mailula broke the deadlock in the sixth minute with a shot inside the box, thanks to Peter Shalulile’s assist.

Later, Thapelo Morena nearly put the ball in his own net when he tried to clear the ball from Monnapule Saleng’s curling free-kick. However, Ronwen Williams was alert to make a wonder save as he palmed the ball over the bar.

The Sea Robbers appealed for a penalty after midfielder Thabang Monare appeared to have been fouled in the edge of the box. However, their cries fell on the deaf ears of the referee who called for the match to play on.

In the last 10 minutes of the half, the Soweto giants threw everything in the visitors’ box, seeking an equaliser. Masandawana backline was astute and alert to anything that was thrown their way.

The scoreline remained unchanged for the remainder of the half as both teams were no longer constructive.

ATTACKING FOOTBALL FROM BOTH ENDS

In the 52nd minute, Xoki came close to equalising for Pirates but his header went wide. Moments later, Monnapule Saleng’s shot hit the side netting, however, the assistant referee had already raised his flag for offside.

Substitute Vincent Pule hit the upright just before the hour mark after beating Williams and Bandile Shandu tried to pick up the pieces but his effort was expertly dealt with by Williams.

Later, Sundowns skipper Themba Zwane wasted a golden opportunity to double the lead after he and Shalulile broke out in a counter-attack. Pirates ‘keeper Sipho Chaine came to his team’s rescue, denying Mailula to double the lead.
