Maritzburg on the verge of naming Maduka’s successor

Maritzburg United are on the verge of naming John Maduka’s successor, with the club set to make an announcement in due course, FARPost has learnt.

As reported by this publication, Maritzburg parted ways with Maduka most recently due to a series of poor results, selection decisions and tactics.

Indications are that Maduka had favouritism and used religion excessively in his coaching.

Maduka left Maritzburg languishing at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table after 13 games. They have only registered two wins and five draws and lost six times.

After showing Maduka the exit door, The Team of Choice officials met with former Orlando Pirates coach Fadlu Davids in Maritzburg on Wednesday to discuss the terms following an initial meeting prior.

DAVIDS AVAILABLE

Davids’ stint as an assistant coach to Josef Zinnbauer at Russian Premier League side Lokomotiv Moscow ended prematurely.

The German coach, Zinnbauer, who roped in Davids in Russia, having worked with him at Pirates was sacked.

According to sources, Davids’ return to Maritzburg is concluded as both parties are happy with the terms, with the coach set to be unveiled as the club’s new coach.

Davids will be making a return to the KwaZulu-Natal side after leaving in 2019 as a result of indifferent results.

There were talks of Davids joining AmaZulu to replace Brandon Truter, but he ended up reuniting with Zinnbauer in Russia, where he only spent a few weeks as the German coach was sacked.

Davids completed his move on Wednesday and was at Harry Gwala Stadium to sign the new deal; he is expected to start next week as a coach, as per insiders.

“Fadlu Davids is back and was in the office today, he is set to be unveiled next week, and the statement should be released this week,” a source revealed.

The insider further revealed that Maduka left with his technical team, and Davids is set to arrive with his new staff.

Davids had an excellent spell at Maritzburg as he finished in the top four in the league and also played in the Nedbank Cup final, where they lost to Free State Stars in 2018.

With the FIFA World Cup break looming, Davids will have enough time to come in and attempt to hit the ground running in a familiar environment.
