A Sphelele Mkhulise strike was enough to send Mamelodi Sundowns back to the top of the DStv Premiership table.
The 26-year-old midfielder took heed of co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s advice recently.
Mngqithi last week placed a demand on the talented midfielder to add goals and assists to his game.
Over the weekend, in the 8-1 drubbing of La Passe of Seychelles, Mkhulise turned provider for one of the goals.
On Wednesday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Mkhulise scored Sundowns’ only goal.
His work-rate in midfield was commendable, as his stock continues to rise.
The first half was a bit of a balanced affair, with an impressive Gallants enjoying an equal share of possession.
The second half was a totally different affair, as the visiting Gallants looked a little subdued.
The win saw Sundowns return to the top of the table. They overtook SuperSport, who had assumed pole position after Tuesday’s fixtures.
Sundowns now sit at the top with 22 points, level with second-placed Richards Bay, who have played two more games.
While Sundowns were bouncing back to the top, their on-loan defender Lyle Lakay beat his own goalkeeper. Lakay is on loan at Cape Town City.
His own goal handed Richards Bay their sixth win of the season. The win saw them move to second place as they continue to enjoy a dream debut season.
The own goal came right at the stroke of full-time. At the time, City thought they had stolen a point from the in-form PSL new boys.
Of course, it was City that enjoyed the greater share of possession. They had a total of 16 shots at goal against seven by the hosts.
City were unlucky as 10 of their shots were on target, while Richards Bay only had one on target.
