Our training looked like a hospital ward – Mngqithi

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has given an update on the health crisis the club faced before their final League match against Royal AM on Monday.

Sundowns announced on Monday that they experienced an outbreak of flu which affected the majority of its players.

The club then decided to drop the affected players as a precautionary measure. But speaking during the media briefing held at Sun City on Thursday, Mngqithi said their training session looked like a hospital ward.

“Yah man that one is a little bit tough one because yesterday in our training session we were a little bit happy that a lot of the guys managed to train,” he said.

“But it looked like a hospital ward there, everybody was coughing and we were worried that maybe today they might come back even worse. But amongst the players in the Royal AM game, there are those that have started with the symptoms of flu.

“It’s a tough going in that space but however we are very optimistic that we might have a full complement of the squad over the weekend because the experience from the other players that were sick did not take that long for them to be able to start training,” added Mngqithi.

“Others who played against Royal AM were sick during the weekend but they were able to come back and play on Monday when we played so we believe we might have a good squad to compete in that match.”
