Polokwane Municipality closing in on Kaizer Chiefs deal

Polokwane Municipality have confirmed talks are at an advanced stage to have Kaizer Chiefs bring some of their home matches to Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Chiefs, whose primary venue is FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, command a huge support base when they travel across the country.

This is evident as most of the matches have been sold out since the government granted supporters permission to attend matches.

If the deal goes ahead, it would not be the first time Kaizer Chiefs host their matches in Polokwane.

Between 2011 and 2014, Amakhosi took some of their home fixtures to the 2010 World Cup venue, Peter Mokaba.

POLOKWANE SECURES KAIZER CHIEFS?

The municipality Mayor, John Mpe, has told this publication that they were engaging not only Chiefs but Swallows as well.

“We can tell you now, Kaizer Chiefs will be playing in Polokwane some of their games from January next year,” said Mayor Mpe.

“We will also continue to engage Swallows. They have also shown interest in coming to Polokwane. In principle, we have agreed. We will sign a contract with Kaizer Chiefs, but we will make the proper announcement alongside Kaizer Chiefs.

“We will be with Chiefs in the coming few days. Before we celebrate [Christmas lighting] at the park. We will have a joint announcement on some of the details of how we are going to work going forward,” he said.

“But what excites us is the fact that many people do not see and appreciate it. But we were able to get Sekhukhune United from Tembisa, to come back home to Polokwane.

“If you remember, the game between Sekhukhune and Orlando Pirates was massive. The stadium was almost full.”
