REVEALED: Why Kaizer Chiefs cut ties with Nike after 23 years

Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung has revealed the reason why Amakhosi cut ties with their kit sponsor, Nike.

She stated that the club felt like it was the right time to part ways with Nike as they wanted to take a different direction as a club and shake up things a little bit.

This comes after Chiefs announced that Kappa will become the Glamour Boys’ official technical sponsor and licensing partner from the 2023/24 season.

The club have penned a five-year deal with the Italian sportswear giants.

Chiefs’ partnership with Nike will be ending when the sponsorship contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

JESSICA MOTAUNG SPEAKS…

In an interview on Metro Sports Night Amplified [SNAWA], the club’s marketing director said: “In terms of the current changes, these things happen.

“We decided to take another direction after evaluating our relationship with Nike who also wanted to go a different direction.

“Look, things are evolving now, we definitely looked at where we want to go as the club and this was the decision to make.

“Certainly like any partnership, I’m very happy chiefs are able to maintain long relationships with our sponsors for a long period of time.”

She went on to divulge that there were other brands that also wanted to come on board, but they had to go with the brand that they thought would be good for the club.

“We had other brands interested in sponsoring us but we made sure we negotiate with the partner that is best suited for us and understood where we are going as a Kaizer Chiefs brand,” she added.

The relationship between Chiefs and Kappa goes back to 1989 which lasted for seven years and one can say that might have been the reason why Amakhosi opted to partner with the Italian sportswear once more again.
