Richards Bay tie down captain to new contract
PSL newbies Richards Bay FC have moved swiftly to tie down their captain to a new deal ahead of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership campaign.
Katleho Maphathe has been offered a two-year [plus one] deal by Richards Bay after an impressive showing in last season’s GladAfrica Championship, as it was previously known.
The Free State-born defender amassed an impressive 29 appearances and scored one goal in the second tier as the team gained automatic promotion to the top flight of South African football.
The 29-year-old centre-back joined the club in 2016 and has since established himself as one of the key players.
“The boy [Katleho Maphathe] was offered a new deal in the off-season, which he signed. It’s a three-year deal. The boy is very excited, given the fact that he always wanted to play in the PSL.
“This is his first ever season in the top league so extending his contact just meant that his dream of playing in the PSL is not dented,” said a source close to the player.
The Kwa-Zulu Natal-based side has already made its intentions clear of wanting to compete after the signing of former Orlando Pirates stars Nkanyiso Zungu and Abel Mabaso, Indiviwe Mdabuka, Matome Mabeba, Sandile Mthethwa, Siyanda Dlamini, Sanele Barns, Michael Gumede, Thulani Gumede, Yamela Mbuthuma, Neil Boshoff and Ugandan goalkeeper Omar Salim Magoola.
With the DStv Premiership season set to kick off on the 5th of August, Richards Bay will be looking to get their campaign off to a flying start in the KZN derby against Golden Arrows on the 6th of August.
