Ronwen Williams opens up about smooth Sundowns transition

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has opened up on his smooth transition at the defender South African champions. He describes it as a swift transition, as he has played many games since linking with the Tshwane giants.

Prior to joining Masandawana, there were mixed feelings about Williams’ move. He was going to face a lot of competition at the club as there are three experienced goalkeepers already; Dennis Onyango, Kennedy Mweene and Reyaad Pieterse.

WILLIAMS WANTS TO BE BETTER

“It’s been a pleasure for me to be part of such an amazing team, a massive brand on the continent. I set high standards for myself, the adaptation was easy for me, it was smooth because I want to be better, I want to be challenging myself,” Williams told the media.

“The transition for me, as much as at my previous club was a long time. It was easy knowing a lot of players having worked with them before made it much more easy for me. I got a mentality of winning, and this big club associates itself with winning.

“I got so much abilities that were hidden coming out now at such a big team. I think in the short space that I’ve been here, I have improved already, and there is so much more to get even better, so that motivates me.”

Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena also threw in some weight about Williams’ adaptation at the club. He revealed the unique skill he bring to them.

“He’s been exceptional. I don’t know if you have seen how many attacks Ronwen has been responsible for in this club so far.

“Just go back and watch the goal we scored against Maritzburg United and then tell me how many goalkeepers in this country can make a pass like that,” Mokwena told the media.

Williams will be in goal for Bafana Ba Style on Saturday when they take on AmaZulu in the first semi-final of the Carling Black Label Cup. The second semi-final will be a Soweto derby as Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates collide.
