Rulani Mokwena explains Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena’s absence

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has explained why the duo of Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena were absent on Saturday’s DStv Premiership tie against Sekhukhune United.

Williams and Mokoena, both former SuperSport United players, have been key for Sundowns this season.

In his first season at the club, Williams, the Bafana Bafana captain, has wrested the Sundowns number-one jersey from veteran goalie Denis Onyango. This led the 31-year-old to be the preferred choice in between the sticks instead of the trio of Onyango, Kennedy Mweene and Reyaad Pieterse.

Since joining Masandawana, Williams has made 18 league appearances and managed to keep 13 clean sheets.

On the other end, midfield maestro Mokoena has been bossing the midfield in his second season with the Tshwane giants.

He has also played 18 games in the league so far this season. The Bafana international has managed to find the back of the net once and bagged one assist.

WHY RONWEN WILLIAMS AND TEBOHO MOKOENA WERE ABSENT

According to the mentor, the two players missed the game, so other players can get an opportunity to play.

“It’s just rotation, giving others a fair chance which they have done very well. That helps a lot with the group dynamics, especially because of the leadership status,” Mokwena told the media.

“Denis Onyango is Denis Onyango. He’s been in that space. It gives you the opportunity to have Kennedy [Mweene] on the bench, have Riyaad [Pieterse] on the bench and be part of the group.”

MOKWENA ON ANDILE JALI AND BONGANI ZUNGU’S PERFORMANCES

Rulani Mokwena further revealed that he is impressed with the performances of midfielders Jali and Zungu, who have been given some opportunities to play after struggling for game time.

“AJ [Andile Jali] has been superb in the last two games, and [Bongani] Zungu had some good minutes on him; he’s had good possibilities,” Mokwena added.
