Rulani Mokwena refuses to take credit for Sundowns’ incredible form

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has declined to take credit for the team’s incredible form in the past few months.

The 35-year-old coach was appointed the sole head coach of Sundowns in October when the club restructured the technical team.

Since his promotion, Mokwena has refined the team’s style of play. Sundowns have improved fluidity in their game and currently seem unparalleled in the DStv Premiership.

The Brazilians have won all seven games in all competitions under Mokwena’s supervision. While they haven’t conceded, they have found the back of the net on 21 occasions.

Mokwena heaped praise on his troops, saying the game belongs to them. The Soweto-born tactician argued that Sundowns’ success was due to collective effort.

He stated that his side is still playing the Shoe Shine and Piano that was created a long time ago by the legends of the club.

RULANI MOKWENA REFUSES CREDIT FOR SUNDOWNS FORM

“I think it’s the DNA of the club, it’s the culture of the club,” he said.

“Mamelodi Sundowns is about Piano and Shoe Shine. It’s a style of play that was designed and created years ago by many legends.

“And then of course it’s because of the quality of the players. And you cannot speak a lot about how we play without mentioning how good our players really are.”

The former Orlando Pirates coach also insisted that Bafana Ba Style are not yet where he wants them to be.

During the Richards Bay clash, he was somewhat unhappy that they gave the ball away cheaply and allowed the opponents to fight back.

“When I say to people this team is not there yet and not the finished product, people say people disagree,” he continued.

The Tshwane giants are the favourites for the league title and still have the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League to play for.

They’re comfortably sitting on top of the DStv Premiership table with 37 points and ten clear after 15 games.
