Steve Barker reveals Stellenbosch’ ambitions

After a fourth-place finish during the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season, Steve Barker remains ambitious of achieving great success in the current season.

Their ambitions were evident as they were one of the busiest clubs during the transfer window period. They have roped in players such as William Likuta, Nhlanhla Mgaba, Sinethemba Mngomezulu, Sihle Nduli, Vusi Sibiya, Lasse Sobiech and Fawaaz Basadien.

After their 0-0 draw against Marumo Gallants this past weekend, head coach Steve Barker insists it’s a matter of time before the club challenges for the league title.

“We have high ambitions to continue progressing as a club both on and off the field,” said Barker.

“So we are looking for another achievement, each season that we have a good achievement and lay the foundation with all building blocks we would one day challenge for the league.”

Ahead of the home fixture against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, Barker wants his charges to utilise the chances they create, primarily through set-pieces.

“We had some very good deliveries in certain areas first half and also second half with the changes that we created.

“So, yeah, the deliveries were good from Pirates set-pieces, but we need to go back to the drawing board and improve on the contact and movement and make sure that we capitalize,” he said.

Stellies were amongst the eight teams that failed to find the back of the net during the opening day of the season.

Only 10 goals were scored over the weekend, with only two teams scoring two goals [Mamelodi Sundowns and Richards Bay].

Stellenbosch’s next match will be against Orlando Pirates at Danie Craven Stadium at 19:30.
