Sundowns win again…beat Botswana team hours after AmaZulu game

Mamelodi Sundowns showed their strength in depth by playing against a Botswana team and win, hours after beating AmaZulu 1-0 on Sunday.

Sundowns beat former Botswana Premier League champions Township Rollers FC 5-0 in a practice match played from 6:30pm.

Details about the match remain sketchy but Sundowns are said to have scored through Aubrey Modiba, Lesedi Kapinga and Lyle Lakay, among others, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

It was at the same venue where Sundowns beat AmaZulu courtesy of Marcelo Allende’s last- gasp goal in the DStv Premiership encounter.

Rollers players and coaches actually witnessed Sundowns in action against Usuthu.

ONYANGO SAVES PENALTY

The Gaborone-based side was denied a scoring opportunity by Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango who saved a penalty. Sundowns led 4-0 at break.

Onyango remains Sundowns number one but he was not in the playing squad for the encounter against AmaZulu.

Ronwen Williams has featured in most of the games between the sticks since his switch from rivals SuperSport United.

Reyaad Pieterse deputized Williams in the AmaZulu game.

SUNDOWNS REUNION WITH NGELE

Rollers featured their new signings, including former Sundowns winger Mogakolodi Ngele.

The former SuperSport United winger seemed happy returning to his former home.

Ngele seized the moment to pose for photo opportunities with his former Sundowns team mates such as Themba Zwane.

Rollers admitted that they were thoroughly outthought and outplayed by Sundowns.

“Sundowns dominated and won. Township Rollers FC who missed a late penalty saved by Dennis Onyango made some effort but were outplayed on the day and will learn from the first defeat of pre-season,” Rollers posted on their Facebook page.

The Botswana side had before the match said Sundowns assured them that they would feature a strong squad.

“Later at 18:30, Rollers play Sundowns in a friendly, with the Brazilians having pledged to make good use of their star-studded squad to give the Blues a solid friendly after their league game,” Rollers said in a brief statement.
