The role Shandu is playing in Monyane’s rise
Orlando Pirates defender Bandile Shandu says he is enjoying the healthy competition that Thabiso Monyane has brought him in the side.
Last season, Shandu was guaranteed a starting place on the right-back/right wing-back for the Soweto giants.
However, this campaign, the versatile star has stiff competition from Monyane, a youngster who has been brilliant and consistent each time he has been given an opportunity to feature.
In the 2020/21 DStv Premiership season, Monyane only made six appearances. And in the current campaign he has made five so far. He is looking to cement his place in the Pirates starting 11 and has the backing of Shandu.
“I think you can see the way Thabiso [Monyane] has been playing, it’s pretty obvious he’s been playing very well. We just been supporting each other that’s what the team is about,” Shandu told the media.
“We have a very good relationship, I’ve been supporting him since day one, that’s the main focus and how we push each other as well.
“The competition is a good one, whoever is playing is giving their all that’s what is important. I’m happy for him. I’m enjoying seeing him do what it’s right. I just hope he continues that way and remains focused.”
SHANDU ON BAFANA PLACE
Shandu further revealed that he is not worried about his place in the Bafana Bafana squad as he is not having much game time like last season.
“For me the team is important, whatever comes after that is a bonus for me, we put the team forward,” he added.
“I’m not focusing on Bafana Bafana, I’m just making sure as a team we collect three points and we play as a team. Bafana comes after great performance that the team gives in.”
The duo will continue battling for the right-back/right wing back spot when the Bucs take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semifinal first leg at Orlando Stadium.
