Themba Zwane’s advice to Khanyisa Mayo

Mamelodi Sundowns ace Themba Zwane has told talented marksman Khanyisa Mayo to strive for consistency should he be lured to join the DStv Premiership defending champions.

The Cape Town City forward, Mayo, has been linked to the Tshwane giants, who are looking for a short-term backup for Peter Shalulile, who has been battling injuries of late.

Shalulile has been on the treatment bed since he was forced off the MTN8 final on October 1 against Orlando Pirates.

As a result, the Rulani Mokwena-coached side is believed to have identified Mayo as a perfect fit to hold the fort in Shalulile’s absence.

And Zwane, who has been in the Sundowns’ set-up since 2014, told the 24-year-old centre-forward that the Chloorkop team is different.

“I told him that Sundowns is different. You need to be on top of your game. In each and every game that you play, you have to be consistent so that you can maintain your position,” said Zwane.

“I think he has the ability to play there. If he wants to come to Sundowns, he is more than welcome.”

However, there is no doubt that CT City will aim to hold onto their skilful attacker for as long as they can.

And as attention increases on Patrick Mayo’s son, they will hope to keep him focused if he retains his scintillating form.

What will probably trigger more attention to Mayo, who is already part of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana set-up, is his sizzling pace and that his cultured left foot is also very useful on set-pieces.

Mayo has grown from strength to strength in terms of confidence since his Bafana Bafana debut, where he featured in friendly matches against Sierra Leone and Botswana.

Domestically, Mayo’s been one of the most improved players for the Citizens.

In the 2022/23 season, he has so far contributed five goals and two assists in all competitions for the Cape Town outfit.
