Three reasons why Eric Mathoho is likely to leave Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs veteran defender Eric Mathoho may be the latest player to leave the club when the season ends in May.

Last month, the Soweto giants parted ways with midfielder Njabulo Blom after he sealed a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit St. Louis SC.

The 32-year-old survived a massive chop ahead of the current season when Amakhosi offloaded almost half of their squad members to build a new team under new coach Arthur Zwane.

The Glamour Boys parted ways with Bernard Parker, Samir Nurkovic, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Leonardo Castro, Lebogang Manyama, Daniel Cardoso, Lazarous Kambole, Dumisani Zuma, Daniel Akpeyi, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Anthony Agay and Kearyn Baccus.

Mathoho joined Chiefs back in 2012 from Bloemfontein Celtic and has featured in over 250 game for Amakhosi with 26 goals and one assist. He has won two Premiership titles with the club and an MTN8 trophy.

FARPost writer, Otis Ntshangase looks at the reasons that can lead Mathoho to parting ways with the Soweto giants.

NO GAME TIME

Mathoho fell out of favour under coach Arthur Zwane as he has not played a single for Chiefs this season.

The only match he played was in the 2022 Carling Black Label Cup back in November 2022, where he was voted in by the fans.

Despite Chiefs defence being shaky and conceding silly mistakes at the back, the centre-back has not been given an opportunity to prove himself in the field and fight for his place.

CHIEFS SIGNING A PRE-CONTRACT WITH DITLHOKWE

Most recently, the Soweto giants announced that they have signed a pre-contract with SuperSport United defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe.

He penned a deal of four years, and the Botswana international will officially join his new club in July 2023 after his contract with SuperSport expires.

NO CONTRACT EXTENSION TALKS

On 1 January 2023, Mathoho entered the last six months of his contract with Kaizer Chiefs. So far the two parties haven’t met to discuss any extension or the player’s future.

Therefore, Mathoho is eligible to begin talks or sign a pre-contract with any club interested in his services.
