What Rulani Mokwena demands from Bongani Zungu

Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro Bongani Zungu has described his coach at the club, Rulani Mokwena, as a boundary pusher with a thirst to see him get back in the groove.

It has been three months since Zungu rejoined Sundowns and Mokwena made it known and clear that he is unhappy with the fitness progress of the player.

Mokwena, appointed as the sole head coach at Sundowns last month, demands that the highly rated midfielder, Zungu work his fingers to the bone to cut it at Chloorkop.

Zungu signed a deal with Sundowns in August as a free agent following his departure from French side Amiens SC.

But he was out of shape upon his return to South Africa, which he deemed to be for ‘personal reasons’.

“He [Mokwena] played a massive role to bring me to Sundowns because I had other options,” said Zungu.

“And coach Rulani I always tell him that ‘you are always not happy’; like he wants more and more, and he told me personally before he told the media that he is not happy.

“I knew, and I know that he demands more and more from me, and I just want to work hard, and when I do get an opportunity to play, I will do well,” added Zungu, who had a decent season in Portugal’s topflight at Vitória Guimarães SC to attract interest in France.

In Scotland, in the colours of Rangers, where he won the Scottish League, Zungu made 20 appearances in all competitions, including five in the Europa League during the 2020/21 season,

And last campaign, he only featured 16 times for Amiens. Zungu failed to make any meaningful contribution in those two seasons, with zero goals and assists to his name.

Now back at Sundowns, with his reputation as a good player, many would have expected Zungu to walk back into the Tshwane side’s starting line-up.

However, with the lack of match fitness and competition for places at Sundowns, that hasn’t been the case, as Zungu has only featured on five occasions this season.

Zungu has vowed to work hard, stating that he desires to help Sundowns win the CAF Champions League while revealing that he is likely to be back to full fitness by the end of December.
