Who is Thapelo Maseko? SuperSport’s goalscorer against Sundowns

Teenage sensation Thapelo Maseko opened the scoresheet for SuperSport United against Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday night at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. SuperSport went on to win 2-1.

But who is he?

Thapelo Maseko is a SuperSport DStv Diski Challenge graduate. He was born on 11 November 2002, meaning he turns 20 later this year. His preferred position is playing as an attacking midfielder. However, he can be deployed in the heart of midfield.

Last season he played a huge role for the Thabo September-led reserves team in the DDC. Matsatsantsa finished second behind champions Stellenbosch FC.

For his hard work, dedication and consistent performances in the field of play, he was promoted to the senior team.

Maiden top-flight season

In the 2022/23 season, the 19-year-old has been consistent whenever given a chance to play by coach Gavin Hunt. Maseko has featured in five out of six DStv Premiership matches and has found the back of the net twice.

His debut goal was in a 2-1 loss against AmaZulu a few weeks ago. His second goal came against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday as Matsatsantsa pulled a shocker. SuperSport stunned their cross-town rival 2-1, getting Tshwane derby bragging rights.

After the match, SuperSport mentor Gavin Hunt was impressed with his youngsters’ performance against a star-studded Sundowns side.

COSAFA squad

“I think the kid Thapelo [Maseko] was outstanding. We got young kids here. They are fantastic. They just need a little bit of time. We need to be patient with them, then they will come,” said Gavin Hunt in his post-match reaction.

Maseko was part of Bafana Bafana’s 2022 COSAFA Cup squad which was held in Gqeberha in July. The squad, however, failed to defend the title they had won in 2021 as they finished as the Plate Final winners.
