Why Rulani Mokwena was all smiles after a draw against CT City

Mamelodi Sundowns may have fired blanks and dropped points against Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday, 4 April, but coach Rulani Mokwena was all smiles after the match.

The 2022/23 league champions were held to a 0-0 draw at Loftus Versfeld Stadium as they stretched their unbeaten run to 22 matches in all competitions.

The draw is a result the Tshwane giants didn’t want, but Mokwena was happy with the two elements his charges did right against a well-organised and disciplined team.

TEAM’S PERFORMANCE

The mentor was pleased with how his side played during the entire match.

“Tough game, very difficult against a very good opponent with good players on the pitch. A very good game of football I liked the performance, a lot better than the performances of Coton Sport and Al Hilal,” said Mokwena.

“The differences are; in Sudan we scored, and in the last match [against Coton Sport], we scored two. It’s football. You can’t win them all.

“I was happy with the intensity, with the passing and the movement. How we dealt with counterattacks was the best I’ve ever seen this season, apart from [Orlando] Pirates games.

CLEAN SHEET

Masandawana finally kept a clean sheet for the first time in eight matches. The last time they didn’t concede a goal was against Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League on 11 February 2022.

“It’s a performance that lacked precision in the final third. We had a lot of anxiety. What I liked is the clean sheet is back.

“We’ve been struggling for clean sheets. I’ve been speaking about it a lot. A clean sheet was back against a difficult side,” he added.
