Mhango the key to Malawi’s Afcon success

There is little doubt that Gabadinho Mhango is Malawi’s best player at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), having scored all the country’s goals in the group stage.

The Orlando Pirates striker made the difference and showed he is a cut above his peers as he became the first Malawian to score a double in an Afcon game and walked away with the Man of the Match award against Zimbabwe.

Mhango will want to put in an excellent shift to silence all the noise related to his Europe ambition comment and ensure Malawi create more history, having reached the knockout phase for the first time as one of the four best third-placed teams after finishing third in Group B.

The Flames will fight for a place in the quarterfinals when they take on Morocco this evening (21:00) at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

“Mhango was the player who scored two fantastic goals when we needed, but throughout the tournament, the team has been doing very well,” said Malawi coach Mario Marinica.

“Every single one of them has worked extremely hard, and they have stood out for their hard work, determination and togetherness.”.

The coach believes Malawi have nothing to lose and everything to win against the former African champions, Morocco.

“So far, the team’s performance has been absolutely tremendous,” added Marinica.

“Every single one of them has worked extremely hard, and they have stood out for their hard work, determination and togetherness.”
