One-time Black Leopards target signs for Malawi giants

One-time Black Leopards target Christopher Kumwembe has signed for Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC in Malawi.

The Blantyre-based Wanderers unveiled Kumwembe on Saturday when he signed a three-year contract.

The 23-year-old has joined from Lilongwe-based Civo Service FC following the failed more to the Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Leopards.

CHRISTOPHER KUMWEMBE BECOMES COACH MARK HARRISON’S SECOND SIGNING

Former Chippa United coach Mark Harrison, now in charge of Wanderers, has made Christopher Kumwembe his second signing.

Harrison joined Wanderers in October this year and he has embarked on a rebuilding exercise ahead of next sea.

Wanderers unveiled Christopher Kumwembe hours before they took on rivals Nyasa Big Bullets in the Airtel Top 8 final in Lilongwe.

Wanderers won the cup after beating Bullets on post-match penalties.

“Mighty Mukuru Wanderers FC have completed the signing of Civil Service Club striker, Christopher Kumwembe on a three-term contract,” a statement from Wanderers reads.

KUMWEMBE EARMARKED TO REPLACE EX-POLOKWANE CITY STRIKER

Wanderers are anticipating for the departure of veteran striker Muhammad Sulumba.

The former Polokwane City forward Sulumba has gone to Vietnam for trials.

Sulumba finished the season as Wanderers top scorer before he trekked to Vietnam during the week.

He will undergo the trials at lower league side Hoang Anh Gia Lai.

The Flames striker Sulumba also failed trials at Nam Dinh two years ago.

It remains to be seen if Kumwembe, who did not hit double digits of goals this just-ended season, can truly replicate that form at Wanderers.

Kumwembe was supposed to travel to South Africa for trials at Leopards months ago.

However, the window for the trials expired while Kumwembe was trying to process his passport.

Kumwembe had no passport at the time Leopards invited him for the trials.

The youthful striker has now become coach Harrison’s second catch after midfielder Mphatso Kamanga.

“I am very impressed with Mphatso Kamanga,” Harrison said.

“I have watched him twice and l recommended him to the board and finally we have signed him. Very good young talent. He is an attacking midfielder, very creative.”

The versatile midfielder Kamanga signed for Wanderers last week from Karonga United.

Wanderers have an ageing squad including the striking force which also comprises former Orlando Pirates forward Chiukepo Msowoya and Vincent Nyangulu.
