Why former Pirates star Issa Sarr won’t quit anytime soon

Former Orlando Pirates star Issa Sarr is still going strong a decade after he arrived in the South African football scenes, and he explains why he won’t quit anytime soon.

The Senegalese first arrived in the country as a 25-year-old at Chippa United. He spent only six months at the Chilli Boys and joined the now-defunct Platinum Stars the following season.

A sterling performance in Rustenburg secured Sarr a move to Soweto giants Pirates where he spent four seasons.

He went to play for first division side Uthongathi until last season before his move to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM).

Before his move to TTM Sarr was tipped to join the Uthongathi technical team as assistant coach to Papi Zothwane.

“I played most matches during the first round (of last season) while at Uthongathi because coach Papi wanted me to be close to him,” Sarr told FARPost.

“He wanted me to help the boys and the team and in the future be an assistant coach. So it was not a bad idea because you know coach Papi understands and I understand him so I was keen to help him in the project.”

WHY SARR COULDN’T SAY TO TTM

“Suddenly the Chairman here (Masala Mulaudzi) has always wanted me to play for his team. So once he called me, I asked Papi because I had agreed to work with him as his assistant and he gave me his blessings,” he said.

WHY HE IS CARRYING ON

“Whenever you perform during the season it is difficult for you to give up because people judge and say you still have the legs to carry on.

“I don’t know how long I want to carry on playing. I am 36 or 37 I don’t even know [laughs] because I don’t look at my age, to be honest. I can’t look at my age. Each season I do well that means next season I am on. It depends on how my legs are carrying me, how the body is responding or how I am performing.”

Sarr (35) is at TTM on a season-long deal.
