Steve Komphela: ‘Some get into football without a plan’

With multiple clubs having been the subject of unpaid salaries in recent times, Steve Komphela has weighed in as he reflects on past experiences.

The 56-year-old coach recently returned to Lamontville Golden Arrows to try and pull off a rescue mission as the club had lost 11 games across all competitions.

This is his second stint with Abafana Bes’thende having mentored the side between 2018 and 2020.

In his first match after the re-appointment, he guided Arrows to their first league win since November. That result ended an 11-match losing streak.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns senior coach left Moroka Swallows last month after the relationship between the two parties turned south. Financial issues were among the club’s troubles that Komphela experienced while at the helm.

During the club’s media open day on Monday, Komphela was asked whether the thought about Arrows’ financial stability crossed his mind before he considered a return to Durban.

Having worked at the club before, Komphela applauded the Arrows chairlady Mato Madlala for her ability to keep things organised administratively and financially.

Meanwhile, he feels “some of us” get into the business of football “without a plan”, as a result, clubs are overcome by issues along the way.

“With regards to Arrows, I worked with the boss [Mato Madlala] before, and I understand the person she is,” said Komphela.

“And she knows exactly where she’s going with the business model of football. That’s why it [Arrows] is stable.

“Most of us get into football without a plan. If you live a life without a plan, life will plan for you.

“And the plan that comes from life is unexpected, so, it means you must adjust and adapt. Sometimes, it’s too heavy.

“But if you approach life with a plan, then you can dictate because you’ll put your time frames.

“When you live a life on your terms, life is kind but if you live life on terms of life, it can be unkind.”
