Austin Dube drops bold statement about Galaxy’s Nedbank final win over Chiefs

Former TS Galaxy and now-Richards Bay defender Austin Dube has dropped a bold statement about the Rockets’ shocking 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup final in 2019.

Amakhosi were hoping to put an end to what was then a four-year trophy drought. They had last won the trophy in the 2014/15 season when they hoisted both MTN8 and ABSA Premiership [now DStv Premiership].

Galaxy, who were still competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, did the unthinkable humbling the mighty Soweto giants. And with that feat, they became the first team from the second-tier to lift the Nedbank Cup.

They held Chiefs until the end of regulation time and Zakhele Lepasa sealed the victory, rattling the back of the net from the spot in stoppage time.

Dube, who was part of the defence that denied Chiefs a breakthrough on the day, says the result may have been a surprise to many but it wasn’t to them as a team.

He stated that their performances leading to the final made them believe they had what it takes to overcome Chiefs.

DUBE SAYS THEY WEREN’T SURPRISED BY WIN AGAINST CHIEFS IN 2019 NEDBANK FINAL

“To us, it was not a surprise because we looked at how we got to the final,” Dube said in an interview with FARPost.

“We looked at the performances that led us to the final, from [last 32, last 16] quarter-final and semi-final. 

“We were doing well and we didn’t get to the final by fluke. And we knew that having won the previous ones, we can also win that one [final].

“I think we didn’t have pressure because already for us playing in the final was a big achievement. It was also a motivation for us as a team.

“The club had a few seasons in professional football. Reaching a cup final that includes almost every club that’s in South Africa was such a big achievement.”
