Matombo reveals what cost his younger brother’s career at Chiefs

Former PSL player Nkhiphitheni Matombo has made an honest admission on why feels his younger brother, Chris, failed to make it at Kaizer Chiefs.

Matombo was promoted to the Chiefs senior team in 2014. But he was loaned out to Chippa United after failing to make an impact at Amakhosi.

His career had been on a downward spiral until recently when he joined Motsepe Foundation Championship side JDR Stars. The 30-year-old has been in the form of his life and has shown signs of maturity.

Talking to FARPost, Matombo senior admits that there has never been any doubt about his brother’s capabilities, but the fame got to him during his time at Chiefs.

WHY CHRIS MATOMBO’S CAREER FAILED TO BLOSSOM AT KAIZER CHIEFS

“It’s not like the boy didn’t make it at Chiefs,” he told FARPost. “I attended a lot of meetings with Bobby [Motaung] those days, and we spoke about him. I think the stage was too big for him.

“Instead of focusing on football, he started to focus on material things that Chiefs were giving him. I think that was the mistake that he made. But I feel he has realised that he made mistakes,” said the former Manning Rangers player.

“I think he is coming back because he has been able to see the mistakes that he made. In football, if you find someone who has been there, you don’t realise at that age. But when you turn a certain age, that’s when you realise I was supposed to act differently.

“The question is, will time still be there? If the time is still there, you do the right thing. He will certainly make it because he has all the qualities. The only problem is when time is no longer on his side. The way I have seen him play, it won’t be shocking to see him playing for one of the big teams in the PSL next season.”
