Swallows, Tuks set for judgement day in playoff battle

Pretoria University coach Tlisane Motaung has urged his charges to keep their emotions under control as the GladAfrica Championship side bid to pip Swallows to PSL promotion in the final play-offs match.

Motaung’s side is one point clear of second-placed Swallows heading into Wednesday’s do-or-die clash. AmaTuks are the only side yet to lose after winning one and drawing twice. Swallows won one, drew and lost the other.

It means a draw will be enough for Tuks to gain promotion to the topflight, but Motaung has warned his players against trying to play for a draw.

“Look, we know the job is not done yet, approaching every match with a mentality of wanting to win, and the boys know that we have to stick to the game plan that has brought us this far,” said Tuks coach Motaung

“We are trying to get the boys mentally ready and not go into the match wanting to play for a draw because it will be a recipe for disaster, so we want to make sure that everything goes well for us because we came a long way.”

Interestingly, Tuks finished the just-ended GladAfrica Championship campaign as runners-up and as the highest-scoring team in the league.

On the other hand, Swallows struggled to get goals in the just-ended season, only managing 22 goals in 30 games. Tuks scored 40 goals in 30 games in the second tier.

Swallows’ struggles have continued in the play-offs. They have scored the least number – three – despite being second, something that could still haunt them in the final match. The two sides meet at the Lucas Moripe Stadium at 15:00.
